Making of a Template - The correct way of making a template
for creating a wavy effect, concerned maker requires to cut a 2X4 13” of a
longer than the stripes to be. For the flag size that was 36” I had cut this
piece at 49” size. Then I drew on a wave pattern that I thought looked ok and
cut it out on a bandsaw. Later on, one is needed to mark the lines of 1” apart
from to 13”.
Making of the Stripes - In this step, one cuts each stripe to a
length on the mitre saw. Then makes takes the stripe template and then just
trace the wave pattern on to it. Then for the entire consecutive stripes, one
just moved the template with 1” down and traced the pattern for each of the 13
stripes, and labelling each stripe as the one finished earlier.
The Grind - In this stage, the maker is needed to cut out each stripe wave on the
bandsaw. Once you finish, line all the stripes up in order and then you will
have a cool wave effect. Now, the fun part will begin. I joined each stripe
together and used an angle grinder with a shaping wheel to grind it down, all
the offset pieces so it all looks nice and smooth. Then with the use of my palm
sander and sanded through a, 600 grit to finish off the work.
Burning and Staining - Once the rubbing or polishing of the
wooden flag is over, then just first of all burn of each stripe just matching
to bring the grain out of the wood out. Once burned, then with a lighted form
of sanded wood, it is again wiped it all down before the stain is made out. At
this stage, one used Rit Dye for the stain and stained each stripe individually
before glueing it together. This would save, say a TON of time in taping. Once
stained, and then making use of a similar nature of high gloss polyurethane on
all the stripes individually as well. The stain will make the extraction of the
colour also. For this one is not eager to risk any of the colour blendings.
Glue Up - Once the polish is dried, then one just glues and nail down each stripe
together one at a time. Be careful not to use too much of a glue. You don’t
want any to sleep out on the poly. Once everything is dried, then I traced on
the stars with a stencil and cut each one out individually.
